What the press release checker looks at

The same things an editor or a news site checks before reading any further: a headline short enough to show in full in Google, a dateline with the city and date, a first sentence that says who did what, an attributed quote, an About section, a media contact, and a length between 300 and 800 words. It also scores readability, sentence length, passive voice, first person and marketing hype, because those decide whether a release reads as news or as an ad.

How the score works

Each of the 17 checks carries points, weighted by how much it matters to whether a release gets read and run. The headline, the lede, the quote and the length carry the most. A score of 85 or more means the release is ready to send; between 70 and 85 there are a few things worth fixing first. Every check that misses says exactly what to change, so the score is a to-do list rather than a verdict.

Press release format, in one paragraph

A headline of 70 characters or fewer, an optional one-line subheadline, then a dateline (CITY, State, Month Day, Year) opening the first paragraph. That paragraph answers who, what, when and why it matters in under 40 words. Supporting detail follows, then one or two quotes from named people with their titles, then an About section and a media contact. Many releases end with ### to show nothing is missing.
