What we score, and why

Length, because a headline over about 70 characters gets truncated in search and inboxes. Specificity, because a number or a named entity is the fastest way to signal a real story. Verb strength, because news headlines report an event rather than describe a state. Hype control, because the adjectives marketers love are the first thing a desk strips. Readability, because one idea per headline outperforms three.

The fastest fix

If your score is low, the single highest-leverage change is almost always adding a concrete figure and swapping a state verb for an action one. "Our platform is now available" becomes "Vantia opens its API to 4,000 developers." Same news, radically different odds of being read.
