What Domain Rating measures
Domain Rating is Ahrefs' 0-100 score for the strength of a site's backlink profile. The scale is logarithmic, so the distance from 70 to 80 is far larger than the distance from 20 to 30. A DR 90 outlet is not a third stronger than a DR 60 one, it is in a different class. It measures links only: it says nothing about traffic, audience fit, or whether that publication's readers are your buyers.
Why it matters for press placements
A placement's link passes authority from the publisher's domain to yours, and DR is the cheapest available proxy for how much. It is the number to check before you pay for a placement, and the number to check again a few months later, because a link that gets removed passes nothing at all. Placements on our packages are permanent and do-follow, which is what makes the authority compound instead of expiring.
DR is not the whole decision
A DR 40 trade publication read by four thousand people in your exact category will often beat a DR 90 general title read by a million people who will never buy. Use DR to rule out weak domains, then pick on the beat the outlet actually covers.
